A CBS News projection Tuesday showed Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff defeating Republican Rep. Mike Collins in Georgia, preserving a Democratic Senate seat and denying Republicans a pickup they had targeted.
CBS described Georgia as an important opportunity for Republicans seeking to retain Senate control. The projected result leaves Democrats in the contest for chamber control, the network said. CBS said the contest had once seemed favorable to Republicans after Georgia shifted right in the previous election, but Collins failed to gain significant ground.
Ossoff was the only Democrat seeking reelection in a state President Trump carried in 2024, CBS reported. Ossoff was elected in a 2021 Georgia runoff, one of two Senate seats Democrats won in the state that year.
Collins has served in the House since 2023 and runs a trucking business, CBS reported. He secured the Republican nomination in June after a runoff, according to CBS. EconoTimes covered the matchup before Election Day in a preview of the Nov. 3 Ossoff-Collins contest.
