CNN announced Oct. 15 that it will join Google’s News AI pilot through a multiyear deal to provide enhanced content rights for experimental product features.
Google said its News AI pilot covers more than 400 publications around the world. It began in 2025 and compensates publishers for enhanced material supplied for AI features. Google says the program reflects changes in how people seek information and aims to connect audiences with publishers’ original reporting.
Google’s examples include article summaries on publisher pages in Google News and audio briefings that listeners can tailor. The formats credit publishers and link to their reporting, according to Google. In its Oct. 15 update, Google listed CNN among the pilot’s newest participants but did not say whether its journalism would appear in either format.
Sam Felix, CNN’s senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, said CNN would receive compensation for its intellectual property as the companies test other ways to bring its reporting to audiences. CNN’s announcement gave no schedule for the experimental features.
Google says its pilot pays publishers in connection with the supply and use of enhanced content, but the companies did not disclose CNN’s specific payment terms. Their announcements also do not say whether the rights extend to training AI models. The terms of the deal and the features that may use CNN material remain unspecified.
