JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 25, 2018 -- CSX (NASDAQ:CSX) Director of Construction Engineering Charles Bailey was presented with the Association of American Railroads’ John H. “Charles embodies CSX’s commitment to be a good steward of the environment and a responsible company that makes a positive impact for customers and communities,” said Bryan Rhode, vice president of public safety, health and environment at CSX. “He demonstrates how the dedication of one person can help advance the entire company toward its goal of being the best railroad in North America.”
“Through hands-on leadership and proactive project management, Charles has fundamentally changed the way engineering and environmental teams work together, helping to create a more collaborative and innovative culture at CSX, where design and construction methodologies benefit both the environment and the railroad,” Rhode said.
As the Director of Design & Construction Engineering at CSX, Bailey leads a team of engineering experts working on critical capacity projects, clearance improvement, industrial development and projects involving outside parties. In all these endeavors, Bailey has championed environmental stewardship and responsible construction.
Bailey’s collaborative approach allows CSX Engineering teams to get ahead of potential permitting delays and proactively minimize environmental impacts. Because of his dedication and foresight, 2017 was the thirteenth straight year that CSX’s new siding projects received no Notice of Violations from regulatory agencies.
Additionally, last year Bailey’s approach to responsible design and construction practices helped reduce the amount of soil, rock and debris excavated from several siding projects by tens of thousands of cubic yards. This not only reduced the environmental impact of these projects, it saved time and costs associated with transporting the material off site. Bailey was also instrumental in adapting project schedules and implementing additional measures to preserve wildlife. In one case, he coordinated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to relocate about 375 Gopher tortoises from an impacted location to a safe area.
The Chafee Environmental Excellence Award is an annual recognition named after the late Rhode Island senator, who was a strong advocate of environmental efforts. Bailey is the fifth CSX employee in the last six years to receive this honor.
