CSX Corp. reported a quarterly revenue high of $4.02 billion for the third quarter as total volume climbed 5%, while intermodal traffic expanded at a faster pace.

Revenue rose 12% from the same period in 2025, the railroad said. CSX credited the result to better pricing and shipments in its merchandise, intermodal and coal businesses, as well as increased revenue from fuel surcharges.

Freight volume totaled 1.69 million units, up 5% from a year earlier. Intermodal volume advanced 7%, outpacing the increase across CSX’s total traffic.

Operating income reached $1.57 billion, compared with $1.09 billion reported in the third quarter of 2025. The year-earlier results included a $164 million noncash goodwill impairment. With that charge excluded from the 2025 comparison, operating income grew 25%, CSX said.

Net earnings were $1.05 billion, or 57 cents per diluted share, versus $694 million, or 37 cents, a year earlier. Compared with adjusted third-quarter 2025 results, net earnings rose 29% and diluted earnings per share increased 30%.
