Cashfree Payments has added WebMCP tools to its Hosted Checkout so artificial intelligence (AI) agents can navigate payment options while shoppers retain approval of transactions, keeping people involved at the final step.

The tools can retrieve an order summary, show available payment methods and open a selected option, display a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) QR code, and check payment status. Cashfree's developer documentation says, “No tool moves money on its own.”

A shopper paying by UPI must scan the displayed code in a UPI app and authorize the transfer with a PIN. With other options, the customer completes payment on the checkout page. UPI is India's bank-linked system for transferring funds in real time.

WebMCP lets websites offer structured actions for AI agents to use. Chrome for Developers says the feature is at a preliminary stage in Chromium browsers; the WebMCP specification itself remains a draft that is still changing.

Cashfree's documentation limits support to Hosted Checkout pages opened in the browser's main window. Popup, inline, One Click and subscription checkouts are excluded. The company says merchants with eligible setups need no integration changes, while its documentation describes a phased rollout. Cashfree's Hosted Checkout tools are available on Chrome through an origin trial starting with Chrome 149.

Cashfree claims WebMCP can cut the tokens needed to complete checkout by more than 40%, but its public materials do not explain how it measured the reduction. The company says agents can consume tokens while interpreting pages, potentially adding costs for users on token-priced plans. It also says checkout failures can cost merchants sales. The feature fits a wider effort to keep shoppers involved in agent purchases, including Shopify's buyer-approved checkout for AI shopping agents, which requires customer approval before an order proceeds.

Juniper Research forecasts global agentic-commerce spending will reach $1.5 trillion in 2030. The firm identifies trust as the main barrier to adoption and expects traditional e-commerce checkouts to remain in use for the foreseeable future.
