On Wednesday, Netflix announced that it will premiere a new television series based on the classic video game “Castlevania.” According to show producer Adi Shankar, it is based on "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse," the third game in the video game series.
Netflix described the show, which is as follows, “"Inspired by the classic video game series, 'Castlevania' is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar."
The AV Club said the show has been in the works for the longest time. The studio, Frederator, has always held the adaptation rights to the video game series in the last 12 years. In 2006, Ellis worked on, and failed to debut a cartoon adaptation. Gamespot quoted Shankar, who also said that the TV adaptation will be R-rated, suggesting that the show will have a lot of adult themes, and obviously violence.
"This is very much Castlevania done in the vein of Game of Thrones… I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world's first good video game adaptation," Shankar shared.
Season 1 of the adaptation will be shown this year, while Season 2 will debut on Netflix next year, according to Shankar.
