The Independent reported that Democrats had gained control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress as most preliminary results from the Nov. 3 midterm elections were declared.
Voters faced 435 House contests and 35 Senate seats out of the chamber’s 100, the outlet reported. It cited Democratic victories in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and Iowa while describing the Senate outcome. Democrats also retook the House, which they last controlled in 2023.
In Texas, James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton, whom President Donald Trump had backed, The Independent reported. The outlet said the result ended a 38-year period without a Democratic win in the state. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed won the open Senate seat, becoming the first Muslim elected to the chamber, the report said.
Trump blamed Republican candidates for the losses, according to The Independent. In a phone conversation with Fox News, he called some candidates “lackluster”; the report said some defeated Republicans were in Texas and South Carolina. Trump later posted an image of a red cap bearing “VETO.”
On election day, EconoTimes examined economic pressures facing Trump’s party as voters went to the polls.
