DogeOS Launches Testnet to Bring DeFi Apps to Dogecoin

DogeOS Launches Testnet to Bring DeFi Apps to Dogecoin.

DogeOS has launched a public testnet designed to bring Ethereum-style decentralized finance applications to Dogecoin, potentially expanding DOGE’s utility beyond payments and price speculation.

The Ethereum-compatible network went live Wednesday, allowing developers to use familiar tools to build trading platforms, lending protocols and a cryptocurrency-backed stablecoin. Test DOGE is currently used to pay transaction fees.

Dogecoin has a market capitalization of roughly $13 billion, but its native blockchain was primarily designed to transfer DOGE between wallets rather than support complex applications. DogeOS aims to address that limitation through a separate execution system where users can move DOGE and interact with decentralized applications.

Initially, DogeOS will rely on selected operators and specialized hardware. A permissioned sequencer will determine transaction ordering, while validators work with trusted execution environments to verify cryptographic proofs. A Security Council will also oversee the system.

DogeOS eventually plans to connect its security more directly to the Dogecoin blockchain. Its proposed OP_CHECKZKP upgrade would enable Dogecoin nodes to verify zero-knowledge proofs showing that computations performed outside the base network followed the required rules.

The proposal was published in July 2025, while a separate implementation submitted in December remains in draft form. Further development is required before the upgrade could be activated.

DogeOS was created by the team behind MyDoge, a popular Dogecoin wallet. Founder Jordan Jefferson said expanding DOGE’s real-world utility could strengthen the investment case for the cryptocurrency, particularly after weak demand for U.S. Dogecoin ETFs.

Three U.S. DOGE ETFs attracted only about $12 million in net inflows over nearly 10 months and recorded zero net flows on 166 of 199 trading days. Bitwise held less than $700,000 in its Dogecoin ETF when it announced plans to close the fund.

Previous attempts to build application ecosystems around meme coins have struggled. Dogechain’s DeFi applications now hold less than $300, while Shiba Inu’s Shibarium has roughly $140,000, down sharply from its peak.

DogeOS has not announced a mainnet launch date, and the proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade currently has no activation timeline.
