Doosan Enerbility said it had secured a component order for U.S. developer NuScale Power’s small modular reactor (SMR) project, The Korea Herald reported Thursday, giving the South Korean equipment maker a production role.

The order covers the project’s first upper reactor pressure vessel (URPV) module, The Korea Herald reported. The pressure vessel holds reactor coolant, and Doosan will manufacture the assembly for its top section.

The Korea Herald said SMR projects use modular manufacturing: major equipment is produced in separate units and put together at the construction site. The approach is intended to reduce costs and shorten the time needed to build.

Approval for NuScale’s design came from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) before any other U.S. SMR design had received it, The Korea Herald reported.

At the signing in Changwon, NuScale Power Chief Operating Officer Carl Fisher was pictured beside Doosan Enerbility President Kim Jong-doo, according to The Korea Herald.
