Republican strategist Doug Heye said President Donald Trump may face political risk in the midterms as voters compare his message of economic success with their daily financial pressures.

Heye discussed the issue in an interview published Tuesday, Election Day, by France 24. He founded Douglas Media and previously served as a communications director for the Republican National Committee.

Heye said some voters believe Trump puts his own priorities ahead of theirs, summing up the sentiment as “what’s important to him, not what’s important to them.” He said Democratic gains would not necessarily signal greater enthusiasm for the party and suggested the results could reflect dissatisfaction with both parties.
