Doomsday predictions have become a dime a dozen from the religious community, but this time, scientists are saying that the planet is facing an increased risk of getting hit by asteroids. This is courtesy of a meteoroid stream that was just discovered. If the Earth’s trajectory puts it on a collision course with the new stream, it could result in a devastating series of asteroid strikes.
The find was published by astronomers from the Czech Academy of Sciences, Seeker reports. Normally, meteoroid streams are harmless since they are mostly made up of tiny space rocks that will burn up during entry. However, the stream discovered by the scientists were likely left behind by Comet Encke and contain rocks that are as big as 300 meters (1,000 feet) in diameter.
Those are just the ones that the scientists have found. Signs point to more rocks hidden in the stream, which could have even bigger asteroids. As a result, the astronomers are urging for more efforts to find these rocks and determine if they are indeed on a collision course for Earth.
In the paper that the scientists published in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal, they note that some of these rocks could be hundreds of meters in diameter. They certainly are not global catastrophes, but they can still do quite a bit of damage. Precautions in the form of a widespread search would be preferable than responding to disasters.
“Since asteroids of sizes of tens to hundreds [of] meters pose a threat to the ground even if they are intrinsically weak, impact hazard increases significantly when the Earth encounters the Taurid new branch every few years,” the paper reads. “Further studies leading to [a] better description of this real source of potentially hazardous objects, which can be large enough to cause significant regional or even continental damage on the Earth, are therefore extremely important.”
