The National reported, citing Egypt’s Health Ministry, that a train derailment near Gerza junction injured at least 64 people Sunday, sending patients to hospitals in two governorates.
The National reported that several carriages overturned in Giza near Gerza junction while the passenger service was operating on the Cairo-Aswan line.
The ministry said 52 ambulances were deployed. The National reported that Al Wasta Hospital in Beni Suef received 54 people, while Al Ayyat Hospital in Giza received 10.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar told medical facilities in both governorates to gear up for emergency cases and treat the injured, according to The National. The ministry said it continued to monitor patients’ conditions and provide care.
For broader context, The National reported that rail accidents in Egypt have often involved human error at level crossings or signal failures. The outlet also cited a series of crashes in 2020 and 2021 that killed and injured scores, and said Egypt has spent billions of dollars in recent years upgrading its rail network. It did not identify either factor as a cause of Sunday’s derailment.
