The Embassy of Ukraine in Washington said Friday, Oct. 23, that it was resuming operations after an evacuation prompted by an object near the consular entrance that U.S. law enforcement found posed no threat.

The mission said consular services were expected to restart shortly. It said it would work with U.S. authorities to establish the circumstances, but did not identify the object or say who had left it.

Staff and visitors were evacuated temporarily as authorities examined the item. The embassy said the area around the mission was cordoned off while U.S. law enforcement and a bomb squad checked the item; the area later reopened.

Anadolu Agency reported that U.S. Secret Service Police were notified at about 8:40 a.m. ET (12:40 UTC), citing a Secret Service statement relayed by local media. It also reported that several roads and the Key Bridge were closed.
