SOLON, Ohio, Oct. 13, 2016 -- Energy Focus, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFOI), a leader in LED lighting technologies, today announced the completion of the largest industrial retrofit in its history. The retrofit was performed for one of the world’s largest global tire manufacturers in one of its biggest North American factories – a space of nearly 2 million square feet that houses more than 1,000 skilled workers and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
The factory was previously lit by T5 fluorescent lamps, consuming 229 watts per high-bay fixture. The 3,400 new Energy Focus high-bay fixtures, utilizing 27,100 Energy Focus 100-percent flicker-free T8 LED lamps with internal drivers, consume just 144 watts per fixture. This will result in an estimated annual reduction of nearly 40 percent in electric usage, or over $200,000 per year in energy cost savings. The factory, with Energy Focus, was able to secure significant utility rebates, which further reduced the cost of the retrofit project.
In addition to providing its workers with 100-percent flicker-free, higher quality light while reducing its carbon footprint, the factory is expected to realize substantial maintenance cost savings in the years to come. Ceiling heights of the factory range from 25 to 45 feet, requiring maintenance to use lifts and implement temporary production halts when a bulb change is needed. With Energy Focus’s proven product reliability and backed by its industry-leading 10-year warranty, frequent lamp replacements, ballast replacements, and manufacturing downtime to maintain the fluorescent lighting systems will be eliminated. Lastly, the workers will enjoy crisper, smoother and healthier light.
“This retrofit project is yet another milestone Energy Focus is proud to have achieved in improving the energy, sustainability and health profiles for leading industrial organizations — in this case, one of the world’s largest tire manufacturers with more than 100 production facilities in more than 20 countries — in a timely fashion and with an extremely appealing payback,” said James Tu, Chief Executive Officer and President of Energy Focus. “We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the officers and employees at the factory, and we are now working with the manufacturer to retrofit additional facilities.”
