While multiple industries continue to explore the relevant use cases for blockchain technology, a fascinating use case that has emerged is embedding a message in the blockchain and visualize it on a digital wall. Eternitywall.it offers this service.
“Messages written on the wall are embedded in the blockchain, the public registry underneath bitcoin.
There are over 5 thousands copies of this ledger all around the world and soon it will also be in space.
Even if this site goes down or disappears, your message is guaranteed to persist for generations to come”, the homepage of Eternitywall.it reads.
Motherboard explained in an online post that the messages must be short - not longer than 72 characters. Also, in order to send a message, a bitcoin transaction needs to be made.
Users have to make a small payment of 0.00015 bitcoins (about 0.06 US dollars at the time of writing) to write into the blockchain and to see the results on the wall. However, the website offers a free message every hour. The fee charged is used to pay the bitcoin network fee required to get a transaction into the blockchain, explains the Eternitywall website. It is the minimum amount of bitcoin needed to make a transaction.
However, the messages are anonymous and cannot be directly linked to any identity. In case users want to identify the message, they have to pay a little more – 0.00016 bitcoin (about 0.07 US dollars) and send it through the Eternitywall app (only available for Android so far).
“You can’t sign messages through the website, because we shouldn’t know the private key of your bitcoin wallet. But you can sign messages through our app, since it is client-side and accesses your private key on your smartphone without sharing it with us," Riccardo Casatta, the creator of Eternitywall.it, told Motherboard.
