The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) denied reports on Wednesday that Director Kash Patel had traveled to Russia for meetings with Russian intelligence officials, confirming instead that he was attending a law enforcement event in Virginia.
The FBI issued the clarification after a media report claimed Patel had arrived in Russia for a two-day visit involving discussions with the Federal Security Service (FSB), the country's primary domestic intelligence agency.
MS NOW, citing two unidentified sources, reported earlier Wednesday that the FBI director had landed in Russia to participate in meetings scheduled in Moscow and St. Petersburg. According to the report, the alleged visit was being hosted by the FSB.
However, the FBI rejected the account and provided details of Patel's actual whereabouts, identifying Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, as the location of his Wednesday engagement.
"Here’s where Kash Patel actually is… Liberty U, doing a law enforcement appreciation event," the agency wrote in a social media post responding to the claims.
Additional evidence supporting the FBI's statement emerged from local television coverage. Video footage captured by an ABC News affiliate in Virginia showed Patel attending an event in Lynchburg on Wednesday, contradicting the suggestion that he was in Russia.
The footage provided a publicly available account of the FBI director's activities on the same day that the reported overseas trip was said to have taken place.
The conflicting accounts drew attention to the FBI chief's schedule and the accuracy of the initial report concerning possible meetings with Russian security officials.
The original MS NOW report did not publicly identify its two sources, and the information provided did not include additional details about the alleged discussions between Patel and FSB representatives.
Meanwhile, the FBI's response focused specifically on establishing Patel's location and identifying the law enforcement appreciation event he was attending.
The agency's denial, together with the television footage from Lynchburg, directly challenged the reported timeline of Patel's supposed visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg.
As of Wednesday, the FBI maintained that Patel was in Virginia participating in the Liberty University event, rather than traveling to Russia for intelligence-related meetings.
