Britain’s FTSE 100 finished lower Tuesday as investors absorbed earnings updates from HSBC and Reckitt ahead of the U.K. Budget and scheduled rate events in the United States and Canada.
Borsa Italiana/Radiocor reported that the benchmark ended lower. The decline followed Monday’s FTSE advance, when the index added 0.72% to close at 10,767.33, according to an earlier EconoTimes report.
The Independent reported that HSBC shares fell 5.4% and Reckitt shares declined 4.9% during Tuesday’s session. HSBC’s earnings release put revenue at $18.62 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $17.788 billion a year earlier. Pretax profit reached $9.632 billion, up from $7.295 billion. Banking net interest income was $11.656 billion, versus $11.049 billion in the year-earlier quarter.
Reckitt said Core Reckitt’s third-quarter like-for-like net revenue grew 3.3%. The company reduced its 2026 growth guidance for the business to 3.5%–4.5%, from 4.0%–5.0%. Reckitt said temporary manufacturing constraints limited its ability to meet strong North American demand for Lysol, while growth slowed in China’s vitamins, minerals and supplements category. Stronger early fourth-quarter demand for seasonal cold and flu brands partly offset those pressures, the company said.
HM Treasury scheduled the U.K. Budget for Wednesday, Oct. 28. The House of Commons Library describes the Budget as setting out the government’s taxation and spending plans, and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said it would publish its economic and fiscal outlook alongside it. The Federal Reserve calendar lists a Federal Open Market Committee meeting for Oct. 27-28. The Bank of Canada scheduled its interest-rate announcement for 9:45 a.m. ET Wednesday.
