Maya Gebala has left BC Children’s Hospital after 262 days of care following the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, her father said, marking a major step in her recovery.
David Gebala announced the news in a public post on Oct. 29. He said Maya had been airlifted to the hospital after the Feb. 10 attack at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia.
Gebala called her departure a milestone and thanked the nurses, doctors and therapists who cared for her. “The road ahead is still long, but this is a milestone no one thought we would reach,” he wrote.
His post also recounted earlier steps in Maya’s recovery. Gebala said she opened and moved an eye and shifted her leg 251 days earlier. He said she breathed on her own after being extubated 238 days earlier, and felt the sun on her face 230 days earlier.
The British Columbia government said the attack killed eight victims and wounded 27 people. The B.C. Coroners Service said an inquest will examine circumstances surrounding nine deaths connected to the events and consider systemic and procedural issues. It said the inquest timing will be announced after the investigative phase concludes.
