CLEARWATER, Fla., Feb. 22, 2018 -- Savoy South Dance Hall hosted its monthly Swing Dance for Charity at Clearwater’s Fort Harrison on Thursday the 15th of February. The 60 attendees helped raise funds for the Applied Scholastics Community Learning Center – an after-school tutoring program that provides effective help for children who are falling behind in school.
After enjoying refreshments prepared by the Fort Harrison’s award-winning chefs, attendees were treated with a lesson in East Coast Swing and then took to the dance floor, swinging to music performed by the Flag Band.
Jen Nickerson, the Executive Director of the Community Learning Center, thanked the attendees for their support and spoke about how the donations will ensure that youth who need after-school tutoring receive it.
At intermission, guests participated in an old-fashioned cake walk to raise additional funds, with cakes awarded for Best Dressed, Best ‘Strut’ and Last Person Standing.
Arleene Bowles, the founder of Savoy South and owner of Right Step Studio, was the guest instructor. Ms. Bowles started the dances as a way to give back to the community. Earlier dances have benefitted Miracles Outreach, the Pinellas Sheriff’s Police Athletic League and My Hope Chest. Ms. Norman has a 20-plus year history as a dance instructor, and has been a student of dance for most of her life.
Savoy South Dance Hall is a mobile dance hall, which hosts regular swing dance classes and events throughout the Tampa Bay Area.
The monthly Swing Dances for Charity are held in the Fort Harrison’s tenth floor Crystal Ballroom, home to one of the only oval wood dance floors in Florida. The Flag Band plays live accompaniment throughout the event. The next Swing Dance for Charity will be held on Thursday, March 15th. The dance class begins at 7, with an open dance starting at 8pm.
