Finland is seeking support from other ice hockey federations to oppose Russian participation, as the sport’s governing body weighs a court ruling affecting five world championships scheduled for 2027.
The Oct. 30 ruling on Russia’s eligibility for five 2027 championships permits the Russian Ice Hockey Federation to enter a team in each event. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said it was disappointed with the decision.
Finnish Ice Hockey Association chairman Heikki Hietanen said the federation has contacted other IIHF members. He said Finland wants other national federations to join its position, giving the opposition a broader base than a Finnish objection alone.
The association said Finland’s team would avoid matches against Russia while the war against Ukraine continues. It said it would set out its next steps after reviewing possible responses.
Russia’s eligibility was among the issues at a two-day IIHF board session that began Nov. 2. The IIHF has said its restrictions were needed to protect participants and uphold fair competition.
