First Bank of Nigeria PLC says eligible customers can make contactless payments through Google Pay at supported terminals worldwide, offering cardholders a new payment option whose availability depends on each card issuer.

FirstBank announced the service Oct. 27. Google’s Nigeria compatibility list includes the bank’s Mastercard debit cards for Google Wallet payments, but the listing does not confirm that every card qualifies.

Google says tap-to-pay requires an Android phone with near-field communication (NFC) and advises users to check with their bank about card eligibility. FirstBank’s announcement says payments are accepted at supported terminals worldwide, but does not name specific countries or merchants.

Abednego Ugwueke, FirstBank’s Group Head, e-Business and Retail Products, called the integration “another significant step” in the bank’s digital transformation. FirstBank refers to the service as Google Pay; Google’s Nigeria compatibility page uses the name Google Wallet.
