Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro won more electoral districts than President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s first-round vote, with a France 24 tally showing a 15-to-9 split in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone before Sunday’s runoff.
France 24 described the North Zone as long associated with left-wing politics and the social policies of Lula’s Workers’ Party, and framed the tally as a shift toward Flávio Bolsonaro.
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) said in an Oct. 5 release that the Oct. 4 vote produced no outright winner, setting up the Oct. 25 runoff. With 99.99% of ballot boxes counted, Flávio received 56,104,268 votes, or 47.03% of valid votes, while Lula received 53,876,617, or 45.16%, the TSE said.
EconoTimes previously covered the national first-round result in a report on a campaign moment that became a social media trend. Voters are due to return to the polls Sunday, Oct. 25.
