JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 16, 2017 -- The Folded Flag Foundation is pleased to announce that the organization has awarded educational grants to 129 scholarship recipients for the 2017-18 academic year. These scholarships, totalling more than $1.1 million, will help 94 families across the United States with funding for their educational needs, including K-12, private school tuition, college expenses and trade school.
The Folded Flag Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides educational grants to surviving family members of military and government employees who have lost their lives as a result of hostile action or in an accident related to U.S. combat operations. Thanks to the generous support of Black Knight and ServiceLink, which underwrite all administrative costs for the organization, The Folded Flag Foundation can provide 100 percent of all its donations directly to families in need.
“Because of The Folded Flag Foundation, I’m able to fulfill my educational dream of becoming a pediatric cardiac nurse and help children struggling with heart trauma,” said Madison Marcum, daughter of Navy SEAL John Marcum, who was killed in action on Sept. 11, 2008, when Madison was eight years old.
Of the 129 scholarship recipients, 97 were new scholars and 32 were returning scholars. The four largest states in terms of educational grants awarded were Texas (22); California (16); North Carolina (16); and Florida (9).
“We are pleased that the generous support provided by our donors this past year allows us to help more family members of fallen heroes achieve their educational goals,” said Folded Flag Foundation Executive Director John Coogan. “These families have sacrificed so much, and providing educational grants helps lead them toward greater success and honors the legacy of the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
