Biotechnology company Formation Bio said Wednesday the Formation Bio Drug Development Accelerator Fund has $600 million in commitments and aims to acquire 10 to 15 clinical-stage programs over the next three to five years.

The fund is intended to pair acquisition financing with Formation Bio's AI platform and clinical operations. Each program will be held in a separate company, with the parent providing development support across the portfolio. Formation Bio says this approach can keep each program's finances distinct and avoid duplicating operating resources for every drug.

The company is targeting drugs in Phase 1 or Phase 2 development, where clinical evidence can help establish whether a candidate merits further investment. It says it expects to reach important trial milestones two to four years after acquiring a program, with timing varying by asset. Formation Bio expects to approach pharmaceutical companies about commercialization or co-commercialization after meaningful clinical progress.

Formation Bio said the fund's limited partners include research foundations, institutional endowments, hospitals and philanthropic organizations. It says those investors gain access to the company's scientific, clinical and operational capabilities. The announcement did not identify the limited partners or state the size of Formation Bio's own capital contribution. Forbes reported that CEO Benjamine Liu declined to disclose the amount.

Forbes also reported, based on an interview with Liu, that the fund had already licensed two potential drug candidates whose names were not disclosed. Liu told Forbes the fund lets Formation Bio “take more shots.” Forbes reported that the original drug developers, fund investors and Formation Bio could benefit if a therapy succeeds.

Formation Bio's David Steinberg has said promising medicines can become stranded in company pipelines. The company says supporting multiple drug-specific companies through one development organization can reduce repeated operating costs and leave more resources for clinical work.

A Form D filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Aug. 11, 2025, listed FB Drug Development Accelerator GP LLC as general partner and Formation Bio, Inc. as its sole member. The filing reported no sales and said the first sale had not yet occurred at the time. It predates the fund's October 2026 commitment announcement.
