The Fox News Decision Desk projected Democratic control of both chambers of Congress after Tuesday’s midterm elections, while President Donald Trump said the war with Iran contributed to Republican losses.

In a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump said, “I think a part of it was Iran.” He also said people understood the importance of what he had done with Iran. Trump said the Republican showing surprised him and that he had expected a better result.

Trump said he would accept the election results and work with Democrats. He said he would veto legislation he considered “insane.”

The war began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. A Pew Research Center survey of 5,062 U.S. adults, conducted from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, found 73% were extremely or very concerned about higher gas and fuel costs related to the conflict. Another 71% expressed those levels of concern about U.S. troops being wounded or killed. The findings were detailed in earlier coverage of the Pew poll. They do not establish why voters cast their ballots.

Asked about additional strikes on Iran, Trump said, “We’re going to take a look.” He announced no decision. Fox projects that Democrats will take control of Congress when it convenes in January.
