Olivier Christen said prosecutors asked investigating judges Thursday to detain Kevin T., 39, in connection with the Oct. 23 shootings in Trappes and La Verrière.
Christen said Kevin T. was due to appear before investigating judges Thursday. Prosecutors asked the judges to hold him in pretrial detention. Officials have not disclosed his family surname.
France 24 reported that police arrested Kevin T. on Oct. 23 after shots were fired in the two towns. His vehicle contained tear gas grenades and a submachine gun, the outlet reported. France 24 also reported that he told investigators he had targeted people who were Muslim or had African or North African backgrounds. President Emmanuel Macron described the shooting as a “racist terrorist attack,” the outlet said.
France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) opened a terrorism investigation after the shooting. The case includes allegations of murder and attempted murder tied to a terrorist enterprise. Investigators are also examining whether victims’ actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion could be an aggravating factor, as EconoTimes reported in earlier coverage of the probe.
