U.S. Democrats failed to achieve a third upset in a row as Republicans successfully held onto an Arizona seat in special election. Republican candidate Debbie Lesko successfully fend off the Democratic opponent Hiral Tipirneni in a special election to replace Trent Franks, who served in the House of Representatives for 14 years until his resignation in December in response to a scandal where he offered money to his female congressional staffers to become a surrogate mother for his child. Following the defeats in three special elections in 2017, Democrats scored a major upset victory in Alabama in December, with Doug Jones narrowly defeating Judge Roy Moore in a special election for the Senate seat formerly held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Last month, in the special election for Pennsylvania’s 18th district, Democrat Conor Lamb edged out Republican Rick Saccone by less than 700 votes.
The fight was over Arizona’s eighth Congressional district, which has traditionally leaned Republican. President Donald Trump, who carried the district by 21 points in the 2016 election lent his support to the Republican candidate by tweeting, “Arizona, please get out today and vote @DebbieLesko for Congress in #AZ08. Strong on Border, Immigration and Crime. Great on the Military. Time is ticking down - get out and VOTE today. We need Debbie in Congress!”
In this closely watched fight, Debbie won 52.6 percent of the votes, while Hiral won 47.4 percent. The victory would help to boost the morale of the Republican candidates, who are in for a tough fight with the Democrats in this year’s mid-term election.
