Organizers of “Gen Z steht auf” say more than 140,000 students and young people registered online for Oct. 31 protests in 23 German cities over conscription plans and public spending cuts.

Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne are the five central rally sites, organizers say, with local actions planned in 18 other cities. The initiative’s website lists more than 12,000 registrations in Cologne, just under 11,000 in Frankfurt, more than 8,000 each in Hamburg and Berlin, and nearly 7,000 in Munich.

Protests will also address rising living costs. The initiative’s position paper calls for investment in education, social security and health care, along with policies to make living costs affordable.

Organizers cast Oct. 31 as the start of a continuing effort. EconoTimes previously covered the initiative’s plan for demonstrations in 23 cities. The rallies are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET (13:00 UTC) Saturday, Oct. 31.
