Gifford Bioscience Limited said a radiometric laboratory began operating at BioHub Birmingham in July, creating more room for client research and tailored assay development services.

The company says the lab supports receptor occupancy studies, uptake and release assays, quantitative autoradiography and radioligand binding. It plans to use the added capacity for client projects and custom assay development.

Managing Director Macer Gifford said clients use assay results to judge which drug candidates should proceed through preclinical work. He described radiometric assays as “core” to the company’s work with customers.

Gifford describes itself as a preclinical contract research organization specializing in receptor pharmacology and receptor occupancy research for neuroscience, oncology and metabolic disease research. Its website also lists functional assays and surface plasmon resonance among its services.

The company says it has been based at BioHub Birmingham since 2017. The University of Birmingham says BioHub is a life sciences incubator offering shared lab space and individual office and laboratory suites. The university says the site supports life sciences companies from proof of concept through expansion.
