As promised, the United States moved its Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem yesterday. While the event was attended by top officials from the United States including President Trump’s son in law Jared Kushner, who is President’s one of the most trusted advisors and his special envoy to the Middle East, President’s daughter Ivanka Trump and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Ambassadors from all across the world boycotted the event.
54 out of 86 ambassadors to Israel boycotted the ceremony held by Israeli foreign ministry yesterday evening. According to reports in the Israeli media, ambassadors from the majority of the European Union countries boycotted the event. Only four members of the European Union countries; Austria, Hungary, Romania, and the Czech Republic attended the event. Five European countries who are not part of the EU; Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Georgia also attended the event. Other notable absentees were Ambassadors from Russia, Egypt, India, Japan, and Mexico.
From Africa, 12 countries; Angola, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zambia, and Rwanda attended the ceremony.
Five countries (Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, and Honduras) from Central America attended the event. From South America, only, Peru and Paraguay attended the event.
The U.S. moved the embassy fairly quickly given the fact that President Trump announced the move in December 2017.
