United States building permits

In August 2024, building permits in the United States experienced a 4.6% increase, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.470 million, slightly revised from an initial estimate of 1.475 million. Approvals for multi-family units, defined as buildings with five or more units, rose by 8.2% to 503 thousand, while single-family authorizations increased by 2.8% to 967 thousand. Regionally, permits saw gains in the Northeast (up 2.8% to 145 thousand), Midwest (up 12% to 206 thousand), and South (up 5.4% to 815 thousand), whereas the West reported a decrease of 1.3%, totaling 304 thousand.
