There were no reports of further fighting after Palestinian and Israeli attacks in the early hours of Wednesday, and both sides appeared to back away from a slide toward a new war after weeks of violence along the Gaza fence that claimed the lives of scores of Palestinian protesters and quite a few Israeli soldiers. The recent violence has been the deadliest since 2014 and risked triggering yet another war in the Middle East.
In recent weeks, Israeli air forces targeted as many as 65 militant sites in Gaza strip in response to more than hundred rockets fired towards Israel that either exploded in Israeli territory or intercepted by Israeli air defense.
However, the calm finally returned to the Gaza strip on Wednesday as Egypt was successful in brokering a cease-fire. Under the Egypt-brokered agreement both sides have agreed to the 2014 cease-fire understandings in the Gaza Strip, however, the agreement doesn’t reach far than reducing violence temporarily.
While Israel hasn’t confirmed the cease-fire agreement, it launched no new attacks since Wednesday morning and insiders say that it has signaled an intention to end hostility.
