Global Geopolitical Series: Iran expresses satisfaction after talks with EU

After meeting with foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany, and foreign policy chief of the European Union, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif expressed satisfaction with the talks. According to him, all the parties have made good progress in their bid to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), better known as the Iran nuclear agreement after President Trump announced last week that he is pulling the plug and the United States would no longer be a part of the deal.

The U.S. departure from the deal would not only re-impose the U.S. sanctions on Iran in the next 180 days, the Trump administration has promised that it would impose harshest of sanctions on Iran in order to bring the country to the negotiating table and address U.S. concerns with regard to its ballistic missile programs and its political adventures in the Middle East.

All other parties have the regretted U.S. decision and announced that they would remain in the agreement. Iran has said that it would remain in the agreement if its interests are upheld by the rest of the participants.

After a 90-minute closed-door discussion, the EU foreign policy chief Mogherini confirmed that the group is looking for a quick practical solution to salvage the agreement and it would reconvene in a week at deputy foreign ministers level.
