Amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, where Iran backed militants firing rockets towards Israel from Syria and Israel taking out Iranian military posts in Syria using its air force, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) confirmed that it won’t come in Israel’s support if a war breaks out with Iran.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, speaking to Germany’s Der Spiegel said that while Israel is a security partner, it is not a member of NATO, so article 5 collective defense doesn’t apply to Israel. However, the Secretary General's remarks couldn't clarify, what might happen if a NATO member such as the United States comes to Israel's rescue.
With Israel and Europe at odds over many issues such as embassy move to Jerusalem, Iran nuclear agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to Europe today to shore up support for a hard stance against Iran.
