Global Geopolitical Series: North American leaders agree to new-NAFTA at G20

On the sidelines of the G20 summit, the North American leaders; Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau, and Enrique Pena Nieto formally signed the new North American Free Trade Agreement, which according to President Trump is a more modern and fair approach. The signing finally ended an arduous process that began with president Trump demanding a renegotiation of the half a century old trade agreement and was marked by repeated threats from President Trump to abruptly end the pact. The signing was done on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Argentina.

However, uncertainty remains as the new deal now moves to ratification by U.S. legislators, where the majority in one chamber of Congress is won by the Democrats in the November election, who remain vehemently opposed to any idea or proposals presented by the President.

The news comes just a day before President Trump is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and the world would be focusing on whether the two Presidents can reach a similar agreement, at least in principle.
