Global Geopolitical Series: North Korea eager to continue dialogue with U.S. despite recent hiccups

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump called off a visit by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to North Korea just days before the meeting citing a lack of progress in terms of denuclearization. While there was a criticism of the move the very next day in the state-owned North Korean newspaper, the ground reality remains different. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un remains extremely eager for the talks to continue. At least that is the message coming out of South Korean officials involved in the process. The desire for a peace agreement remains extremely high among South Koreans and for the first time in history, North Koreans are hoping for peace too at the ground level.

Speaking to reporters, Ambassador Cho Yoon-je, who is South Korea’s top envoy in Washington dismissed a view that Pyongyang and Washington are shifting back to a confrontation after months of diplomatic engagement, instead, he said North Korea remains determined to maintain the momentum of dialogue with the United States despite a recent hiccup. As an evidence, he cited that there were no official statements or highlighting of the cancellation of the event and knowing North Korea for decades, it is a positive sign.

We at FxWirePro also believe that to be the case. The recent cancellation is a part of the intense negotiations that have been taking place since the two leaders met in Singapore. It is also important to note that President Trump said about the recent cancellation that he is willing to be patient when it comes to North Korea.
