Global Geopolitical Series: Romania likely to become first EU country to move Israeli embassy to Jerusalem

Romania could become the first European Union country to follow the U.S. President Donald Trump’s footsteps in recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In a unilateral move, President Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel last year and currently his administration is working on a peace proposal to end the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Authority (PA).

Currently Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila in on a two-day visit to Israel. She arrived in Israel on Wednesday and held a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. Before her arrival in Jerusalem announced that her country plans to follow Donald Trump’s lead in moving its Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and submitted a proposal to do so to her cabinet. However, such a move would require the approval of Romanian President Klaus Johannis, who has so far opposed the move.

The move also puts Romania at odds with the European Union, which has denounced President Trump’s unilateral move.
