Global Geopolitical Series: Tense night at Gaza-Israeli border amid rockets and gunfire

Last night was a pretty tense once for the Israeli people living near the Gaza border as sirens rang through almost the entire night amid rocket fires from the other side of the border and gunfire exchanges. The first set of rocket sirens was activated near the Gaza border in the region of Nahal Oz and Alumim on Wednesday evening.

According to Israeli defense force (IDF), nine rockets were launched from Gaza strip targeting Israeli border area since last evening and continued through the night amid gunfire exchanges. While the majority of the projectiles hit open areas adjacent to the perimeter fence, one was in a deeper territory and was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile unit. IDF also reported that an IDF soldier was wounded by Hamas sniper fire on the Gaza border near the Israeli settlement of Kissufim on Wednesday night. The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to the hospital. As IDF increased its firing in response, two Palestinians have reportedly been killed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held security consultation with the Defense Minister, IDF Chief of Staff and the head of the national security council in light of the developing situation in Gaza and on the Syrian border, where Israel recently downed a Syrian jet as it breached the Israeli border and moved 2 km inland.
