It became clear this week that Israel is looking for more than the recognition of Jerusalem as its capital, which was done by President Trump late last year, after which the U.S. moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem earlier this year. Israel wants the United States to recognize its right to occupy the ‘Golan Heights’ near the Syria border.
According to reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself has weighed in on the matter. In a statement released this week, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that he would not give up hope that the United States would recognize Israel’s sovereign rights on Golan Heights. Israel occupied the Syrian Golan Heights during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War when it also occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. The UN continues to describe the Israel-held Golan Heights as an occupied territory.
However, the Trump administration is in no mood to hand Israel yet another gift as it was cleared by president Trump that Israel received a big prize when he recognized Jerusalem as its capital and it’s now the Palestinians’ turn to receive a gift. This week, U.S. national security advisor John Bolton speaking to Reuters cleared that the idea is not into consideration, “I’ve heard the idea being suggested but there’s no discussion of it, no decision within the US government.”
