In the aftermath of a diplomatic crisis in Saudi Arabia, where a renowned Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Mr. Khashoggi had disappeared on October 2nd, during his visit to the Saudi Consulate to get his divorce paper while her fiancé was waiting outside, President Trump had sent the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Gina Haspel to Istanbul to prepare an American intelligence report on the matter.
After two weeks of initial denial over the disappearance, Saudi Arabia admitted amid an international outcry that Mr. Khashoggi was indeed was killed at the consulate during a fistfight during an argument, where he was asked to return to his home country. Mr. Khashoggi is a Saudi Arabian citizen, who is also a permanent resident of the United States. As the world continues to doubt the Saudi version and Turkey claimed intelligence that his murder was a planned one, Saudi Arabia accepted this week that it was a preplanned murder, again contradicting previous versions.
Turkey, outraged by the happenings called for international actions against Saudi Arabia claiming that it has proofs such as an audio tape of the murder that the killing was brutal and a premeditated one. Gina Haspel has reportedly shared that intelligence with the President, after hearing the audio tape.
However, so far, there have been no further comments or actions except the canceling of visas of several Saudi officials, who were reportedly involved in the incident and that was done before Ms. Haspel’s briefing.
