Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler said Türkiye’s firm application of the Montreux Convention since 2022 helped contain the Russia-Ukraine war’s regional effects, including its impact on the Black Sea.

Guler made the comments at a joint news conference after a meeting in Sofia. He said the armed forces of Türkiye, Bulgaria and Romania had the capabilities needed to take measures related to Black Sea security. He cautioned that decisions should reflect timing and circumstances and be made through sensitive diplomacy.

Anadolu Agency’s report also described attacks on commercial vessels and other war-related hazards as risks to Black Sea security, connecting Guler’s remarks with the maritime effects of the war.

The countries have discussed regional maritime cooperation before. Bulgaria and Türkiye agreed to deepen cooperation with Romania on Black Sea navigation, as EconoTimes previously reported.
