HD Hyundai is linking the scale of a potential U.S. shipbuilding investment to work it can win, Reuters reported, while separately advancing a proposed shipyard venture with Kiewit.

An unnamed company official said HD Hyundai was discussing possible projects with the U.S. government and Navy, Reuters reported. Reuters also reported that the proposed venture could pursue U.S. Navy logistics support ship work. The company expects to finalize the investment’s size and structure by the end of 2026, with the amount depending on how much work it secures.

Separately, HD Hyundai USA LLC and Kiewit Maritime Co. announced Oct. 22 plans to establish HD Kiewit Shipbuilding LLC, a proposed joint venture to develop a shipyard in the United States. The partners have not named the site; they plan to use an existing industrial property with deep water and unrestricted Gulf access.

The companies aim to begin construction in 2027 and bring the yard to full operation in 2029. They estimate it could employ as many as 3,000 people at capacity; that is a potential job figure, not a confirmed hiring commitment.

The venture will consider naval support and commercial vessel work, along with component production for U.S. shipyards, the companies said. Its possible activities include making ship blocks and modules. Reuters’ report adds that discussions have included logistics support ships for the U.S. Navy.

HD Hyundai and Kiewit announced a strategic partnership in July 2026 to explore U.S. shipbuilding projects. The companies say the proposed yard could expand domestic shipbuilding capacity, support workforce development and strengthen supply chains. Those are potential benefits described by the partners.

Hannae Choi, executive vice president and head of the Corporate Planning Division at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, said the venture would “contribute to strengthening the U.S. shipbuilding industry.” The next reported decision is HD Hyundai’s investment plan, expected by the end of 2026; Reuters did not give a specific date.
