U.N. envoy Pekka Haavisto told The National he is awaiting a meeting with RSF leader Hemedti’s bloc before Christmas, which could address Sudan’s transition to civilian rule.
“We are still waiting for a meeting with Hemedti’s bloc to take place before Christmas,” Haavisto told the outlet. The National identified Addis Ababa as a possible venue.
Sudan’s diplomatic effort also includes talks with civilian groups. The U.N. Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs said Somoud representatives were among Sudanese civilian and political groups that met the Quintet in Addis Ababa on Oct. 13. The Quintet comprises the United Nations, African Union, European Union, League of Arab States and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
At a Geneva consultation on Oct. 21, Haavisto said 21 countries and five international institutions took part. He said discussions covered a security solution, the political track and regional perspectives.
At a Sept. 14 briefing, World Food Programme Acting Executive Director Carl Skau said 20 million people in Sudan faced acute hunger and 14 million were displaced. The National reported the meeting was expected before Christmas but gave no specific date.
