The well known bitcoin hardware wallet Trezor by SatoshiLabs will soon add Ethereum support which will allow users to store ether on their Trezor devices.
Although no official date has been announced yet, new source code has surfaced on the device’s GitHub repository which clearly shows Ethereum integration is coming very soon. The team has not decided yet as to how they will implement this cryptocurrency and re looking for community feedback.
By including Ethereum support Satoshi Labs will be the first hardware wallet provider to create wallets that support ether. Since the Ethereum address format is subject to change, the device developers are not entirely convinced that this is the best way to go about things. Also there is a proposal for the transaction signing.
Trezor’s existing owners need not worry about Ethereum support on their hardware wallet as it is likely that the company will support these devices through a firmware update. The community members of Ethereum can weigh in on both proposals, and make their suggestions to how the Trezor wallet should handle transactions. Various responses and suggestions are recorded so far.
Although supporting both Bitcoin and Ethereum is hard, on a long run it could pay big dividends for Trezor. There has been no information so far regarding the implementation of Ethereum. If implemented, they would be the first hardware wallet solution for both cryptocurrencies giving a competitive edge on the market.
Being a Prague, Czech-based innovative cryptocurrency company, SatoshiLabs is involved in the development of products and tools that are helpful for the cryptocurrency community.
