Independent MP Helen Haines’ work in rural health preceded her entry into Australia’s Parliament, where she has represented the northeastern Victorian electorate of Indi since 2019. Her parliamentary record includes introducing a federal integrity commission bill in 2020 and bringing it back in 2021.

Parliament’s biography lists Haines’ earlier work in rural health research and leadership roles. It also lists qualifications in nursing, public health and medical science. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse and midwife.

Haines’ family identified her as the woman critically injured when a vehicle struck her outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday, Oct. 19. The collision is detailed in EconoTimes’ earlier report.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the collision appeared deliberate. Victoria Police are investigating whether it was intentional; the police release dated Oct. 19 did not set a timetable for the investigation. The motive remains unverified.
