Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday that media tycoon and prominent democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai deserved the 20-year prison sentence imposed by a court earlier this week, arguing that the punishment reflected the serious harm Lai had caused to society. Lee’s comments came a day after the high-profile ruling, which has drawn international attention and renewed debate over press freedom and political dissent in the city.
Jimmy Lai, one of Hong Kong’s most outspoken critics of Beijing, was sentenced on Monday to a total of 20 years in jail. The court found him guilty on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, as well as one count related to the publication of seditious materials. Prosecutors argued that Lai’s actions posed a threat to national security, while supporters have described the case as a significant blow to freedom of expression in Hong Kong.
Speaking to reporters, John Lee emphasized that the rule of law remained central to Hong Kong’s governance and said the judiciary had acted independently. According to Lee, the sentence demonstrated that no individual is above the law, regardless of status or influence. He maintained that the charges and penalties were justified under existing legislation and necessary to safeguard stability and security.
The case against Jimmy Lai has become one of the most closely watched legal proceedings since the introduction of Hong Kong’s national security framework. International governments, media organizations, and human rights groups have voiced concern, warning that the conviction could further erode civil liberties and the city’s long-standing reputation as a global media hub.
Supporters of the Hong Kong government, however, argue that the enforcement of national security laws is essential to maintaining order and preventing external interference. They contend that the sentence sends a clear message about the consequences of actions deemed to undermine the city’s legal and political system.
As reactions continue to pour in from around the world, Jimmy Lai’s sentencing highlights the deep divisions over Hong Kong’s future, the balance between security and freedom, and the evolving relationship between the city and mainland China.
