House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats will center the next Congress on household costs and oversight, with a decision on impeaching President Donald Trump still unresolved.
Jeffries said no member of his caucus had asked him to pursue impeachment. He said any effort would require evidence and compliance with legal and constitutional rules.
He said the party wants to lower what households spend on food and fuel, housing and medical care. Jeffries has previously tied his agenda to affordability, including through an earlier cost-relief pledge.
Democratic lawmaker Robert Garcia, expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, is planning inquiries into transactions involving businesses owned by Trump's family. His oversight plans also cover disputes tied to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The president has said he is open to cooperation with Democrats.
