Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform may scrutinize Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s government work if they win House control, Politico reported, amid concerns about political spending and federal contracts.
Rep. Greg Casar, a Texas Democrat on the committee, told Politico he wanted lawmakers to examine Musk’s election spending. Casar alleged that Musk’s support for Republican candidates was intended to help his companies obtain more federal money.
Sara Guerrero, a spokesperson for Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the committee’s top Democrat, told Politico that lawmakers plan to investigate Musk’s role in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The initiative sought to reduce federal spending during Musk’s tenure.
The Texas Senate contest shows the sums involved. The Texas Tribune, analyzing Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, reported that Musk gave $158 million to Senate Leadership Fund in September. The Republican super PAC then transferred $158 million to Texas PAC, which backs Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico.
Musk-backed America PAC separately spent $18.8 million on the race through Oct. 13, the Tribune reported. More than 80% of that spending went toward messages opposing Talarico. Musk’s contribution, the transfer between PACs and America PAC’s spending are distinct transactions.
Musk’s businesses also hold federal contracts. Bloomberg Government’s analysis put SpaceX’s reported U.S. defense contract obligations at $5.9 billion so far in fiscal 2026. Obligations are government commitments, not payments to SpaceX.
House Oversight Democrats raised related questions on March 4, 2025, when they introduced a resolution seeking records on Musk’s government status, potential conflicts of interest and contracts involving his companies.
The Nov. 3 election will determine whether Democrats gain House control and committee leadership when the new Congress begins Jan. 3, 2027. Lawmakers would then decide which investigations to pursue.
