The Kenya Red Cross is assessing aid needs after hundreds fled Ethiopia into Kenya following fighting in Moyale, while many displaced people stay with relatives and well-wishers, Reuters reported Thursday.

Marsabit County commissioner Stanley Kamande said most arrivals were women and children. Many were staying with relatives and well-wishers in villages on the Kenyan side of Moyale, he told Reuters.

Kenya Red Cross official Ibrae John said no site was ready to house the arrivals. The Red Cross review would determine how many people were affected and what assistance they need.

Residents said gunfire was audible in Ethiopian Moyale on Thursday, a day after fighting started. The town lies on both sides of the Ethiopia-Kenya boundary. The trigger remained unknown. Oromiya regional officials had not been immediately reachable for comment.

Separately, the conflict in Tigray involves government forces and an alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
