A €100 million funding round reported by the Financial Times would support British-German startup Hypersonica’s effort to develop hypersonic missiles as London and Berlin pursue longer-range weapons.
Hypersonica said it had received significant funding, and the Financial Times reported the total was €100 million. The Independent said the investment is intended to strengthen European defense as Washington urges the continent to take greater responsibility for its security. Chief Executive Philipp Kerth told the Financial Times that the funding would help the startup compete to supply a deterrent capability he believes Europe needs.
The Independent reported that Hypersonica is part of a UK-German defense cooperation agreement signed in 2024 by then-Defense Secretary John Healey. The reported projects include a ground-launched missile effort designed to travel more than 2,000 kilometers, a cruise missile with advanced capabilities and a hypersonic glide vehicle. The outlet did not state a range for Hypersonica’s own planned missile.
Hypersonica says it has completed a successful test flight at hypersonic speed and describes itself as the first private European defense company to do so. The Independent reported that Britain’s armed forces have not fielded hypersonic missiles for operational use. It also reported that the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation has supported the startup.
